New manufacturing technology for long shaftsMiniTec invests in a custom-built longitudinal machining center 09. September 2026

With a longitudinal machining center developed specifically for MiniTec, the company has significantly expanded its manufacturing capabilities for radially drilled shafts. At the Waldmohr facility, even very long workpieces can now be machined cost-effectively and precisely in a single machining operation.

The investment was prompted by a customer project involving shafts more than 15 meters long. Previously, the workpieces had to be re-clamped multiple times and machined from both sides. “That was all very cumbersome and time-consuming,” recalls Plant Manager Stefan Geyer.

The new system, which was developed specifically to meet MiniTec’s requirements, handles the entire machining process automatically. The shaft is fed in step by step via two roller conveyors, each 5.50 meters long, where it is precisely positioned and then drilled and threaded in sequence. This eliminates the need for repeated clamping and manual operations. As a result, machining time is reduced while ensuring high precision. A particular advantage is the virtually unlimited machining length. Thanks to the intelligent feeding concept, it is also possible to machine workpieces that extend far beyond the length of the roller conveyors.

The new system makes it possible to machine very long shafts cost-effectively.

“With the new system, we can now machine very long shafts cost-effectively—practically to infinity,” summarizes Stefan Geyer. Machine and special equipment manufacturers benefit from this the most. Long, radially drilled shafts are used, for example, in linear axes with long travel ranges, conventional shaft supports, or in sliding partition walls. MiniTec also uses such shafts in its own designs.

The first projects are already demonstrating that the investment is paying off. Last year alone, the new production facility handled several large orders totaling up to 270 shafts. With the longitudinal machining center, MiniTec is strengthening its manufacturing expertise and creating additional capacity for demanding customer projects that require precision, cost-effectiveness, and long workpiece lengths.
