The protective barrier is simply placed between the interlocutors and thus significantly reduces the direct transmission path. This can happen directly via the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract (sneezing, coughing, saliva) or via the hands with which you later touch your face and thus bring the pathogen into contact with the mucous membranes.
